Coach Colin’s Top Tips to Achieve Your Health and Fitness New Year’s Resolutions

The origin of the new year can be traced back to 46 B.C. when emperor Julius Caesar worked with prominent astronomers and mathematicians to solve the problem of the calendar falling out of sync with the sun. As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1 as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month’s namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future.

Success, however it is defined by the individual, requires constant refinement. With the new year upon us, now is an opportunity to reflect on 2015 and make any necessary adjustments for 2016. It should come as no surprise that nutrition and exercise continually top the list as opportunities for improvement, yet most people fail on their resolutions within the first few weeks of the new year. The question is why?

Most new year’s resolutions are a radical departure from habits that were formed months or years ago. For example, if you haven’t done any significant exercise in several years, committing to working out without a coach can cause burnout and potential for injury. A coach helps students see train safely with the right system and recovery methods in place.

The answer is that we help our students form healthy habits. On average it takes about 66 days to build or break a habit. That is why our eight-week transformation is so important. In about 66 days, we will help you get into the routine of working out and eating healthy on a consistent basis. As you make your health and fitness plans for 2016, consider the following:

  • Set a goal to build a good habit and break a bad habit.

  • Be kind to yourself if you have an off day. An off day is normal, but no reason to give up on your healthy habits.

  • Celebrate your victories with non-food based rewards. The rewards don’t have to cost money, but should encourage you to stay motivated to pursue your goals.

  • Work towards building a community of like-minded people. It will be easier to stay focused if you aren’t tempted by your environment.
